Generally similar to the Evarts class, the Buckleys were longer by 20 feet and larger by 200 tons, in order to accomodate a new turbo-electric propulsion system. This system allowed the increase of power to the originally contemplated 12,000hp, which sufficed to propel the Buckleys at the original 24,5 knots. In this case, the improved hydrodynamics of the longer hull balanced off the increased drag of the large hull. This new hull also allowed the installation of a 533mm triple torpedo mount, bringing this class still closer to the originally scheduled DE design.
Various minor modifications were made to these ships in the anti-air armament. Radar equipment was installed as the availability permitted. 49 ships of the Buckley class were converted to APDs during the war. They received four LCVP-carrying davits, a single 5" L/38 gun, three 40mm twin mounts and six 20mm guns, and a cage mast aft supporting two 5-ton cranes.
Escort destroyers of this class served in all theaters on general escort duty. Underhill was lost to a Kaiten one-man suicide torpedo in July 1945.
