Service History
Generally similar to the Rudderow class, the John C. Butler class utilized a steam-turbine drive for 12,000hp.
Various minor modifications were made to these ships in the anti-air armament. Radar equipment was installed as the availability permitted.
Escort destroyers of this class served in all theaters on general escort duty. Ships of this class, John C. Butler, Samuel B. Roberts, Raymond and Dennis participated in the Battle of Samar, engaging the better part of the remaining Combined Fleet. Samuel B. Roberts was lost in the engagement. Two other ships of this class were lost, Shelton, sunk by submarine torpedo off Morotai in October 1944, and Eversole in the same month east of Leyte. The remaining units were scrapped during the 1960s and 1970s.
