The Gearing class was basically a stretched version of the Allen M. Sumner class. In an attempt to increase the speed and the range of the Sumners, a fourteen feet (4,27m) section was added amidships to improve fuel bunkerage. It also made for a more favorable length-beam-width ratio, essential for higher speeds. Without further modifications to the original design, the Gearing had higher range and barely higher speed.
Similar to the Allen M. Sumner class.
